    Start

Disclaimer about the start!!! The position is taken from the Atlas device, boat shape is shown in real size, with the device in the middle of it. Shape is wider than etchells are. Logs are running at 2hz, and app takes the last position before the gun. So it can be that it is taken half a second before which can result in 1.5 error if you are moving at 6 knots. So to have it short, is not perfect, but just a brief look at Matilda in this start will show you that they got called back for a reason. Racesense runs at 10hz, has the boat shape and orientation of the boat and is just better.

7 degrees of bias is big. it is hard to get 50-60 meters back with such a similar boat performances. Bad start and tack still ends up as good as a great start on RC side. AMac was pretty safe with the line distance, still leading at the gun and after a minute of sailing extending that lead.

    1st Upwind

The wind direction in upwinds are always set at the average wind direction of the leg. That means that start was in more left wind than the average later was. Boats going port tack were doing great. Still, the ones going full right got nothing to help them get back. The ones that did it later, as Triad2020 and Rogue, got nice right shift to close on fleet and stay near the rhumbline. Great start allowed AMac to save it from a bit too far left. Many boats ended up over the left layline, too. Huge leftie arrived as boats were rounding the top mark, too late for the left side boats.

Top 3 boats are shown thicker, Triad, Rogue and AMac.
    1. Left than average wind after the start
    2. Group of boats getting great rightie and pressure
    3. Left layline boats losing.

Left, then right, and big leftie at the mark

Clean sailing numbers, sorted by VMG.

    Top Mark

Hue leftie arriving for The Don and TammHaTamm. The numbers shown can be a bit off, since boats rounded the marks in different conditions. The Don ended up with the fastest rounding due to it.

    1st Downwind

The left wind made it logical to keep on with the straight set. However, later went even more left, allowing the boats that gybed to go hot to the gate and the ones on th left were forced to gybe to the mark in a very bad shift. USA1514 and Magpie gaining in the front pack. GWH sailed the best downwind of the fleet.

    Clear gain by boats reaching.

    Gate Rounding

Once the wind shifts this hard, there is only one mark to be rounded. It hardly ever happens that RC adjusts the gate to the wind (i never saw it happening in hundreds of reports done). So you should sail as if there is only one mark. At the very end just recheck if that is maybe not the case. The only time when more LW mark can pay is if bias is caused by the shift that will shift back or if is clear that the wind is only on one side of the course.

Clear gains/losses due to the gate bias of 50m

    2nd Upwind

The exception to the gate bias rule happened this time. The wind went hard right through the whole upwind. USA1514 regained the lead. Is a question what would happen if Magpie has tacked after rounding the gate, since they would be covering USA 1514 well. Looking at GWH that was coming to the gate way behind Karabos , taking the right turn and ended up in front, seems like if Magpie has tacked, they would have been able to control the fleet.

Other than this, not much to say when the wind behaves like this. Was all about tacking in a place that will take you to the mark without overlaying too far. No one can predict how far the wind will keep on shifting.

20+ degrees permanent shift. Ignore the mid part, app cannot calculate wind when all the boats are on the same tack

    Top mark

    2nd Downwind

One way downwind, still some passing lanes available. GWH did the best by staying low after the gybe set. The only boat not gybesetting, HKG, ended up with medium performance.

GWH, thick red line going almost straight to the finish.
GWH and The Don had the best lanes below the fleet.
