Race Area

Start

Distance to the line, including the boats that left the area

Huge left shift and only one place to start. Many boats ended up at the RC side. Pin end boats over the line, losing the practically already won race. In these cases, might be good to shoot on port just behind the pin pack. Would start you off in good shift and probably will not push you over the start line. Also the wind was more from left at the pin than at the RC.

Aldo with such a long line, starting in the middle puts you in a lot of risk of not knowing where the line is. For the race, it might have been possible to get the transit over the pin end.

possible transits on both sides

1st Upwind

The boats starting at the pin (HKG, Privateer and Rogue) were already having a solid upwind guaranteed. They have sailed mostly on only one tack all the way up. A few boats have crossed them with a bit of a right shift soon after the gun and those got even better left pressure. A bit risky move with the mark so much right, but it paid. It paid especially for Magpie that arrived to the top mark just in time before the right boats got some solid right pressure. Forte and Highlander were a bit late.

  1. Huge left gain
  2. Maybe a chance for leaders to go even more left. Staying on port made all sense, covering the fleet
  3. Right gaining at the end, too late to catch up
Pin end boats sailed 14 minutes on port and less than 4 minutes on starboard

Top Mark

Stretched fleet and plenty of space to jump in on port tack. Quite some right boats ended up over the layline.

1st Downwind

Much better to stay straight set. Big gains for the boats doing it.

2 minutes gain by Highlander to Magpie. Tango with the best downwind.

Gate Rounding

Right shift and left turn was approx 35m more upwind. Highlander realized it a bit late, otherwise could gain even more. All the boats going around the right turn were losing quite a lot.

pick any pair of boats coming together to the different marks and you can see the distance sailed extra
DTL drops by boats doing the right turn

2nd Upwind

Difficult leg with different sides in different winds. The best was to go left initially with a bit higher lane and then take the left shift up. All the boats ending up in sides later had a long way to the mark. Left boats sailing against the right shift and right boats sailing against the left shift. Highlander has lost with a few bad shifts, compared to Yo and First Tracks.

  1. Going left with a bit higher lane and tacking paid
  2. both sides having hard time to get back to the mark

2nd Downwind

Another difficult downwind. The boats in back with best times. In the pack, boats close to each other ended up with different performances. Tango did well and Ada, just next to them has lost a lot a one period. The front boats were slower. First Tracks almost taking the lead.
