Race Area

Offshore wind. Good check at land and knowing it will be shifty. Probably the goal is to start in the lifted tack

Start

Huge mid line sag. Very long line and quite some bias to the committee (once again it can cancel out as soon as left shift comes back)

gun moment
sorted by DTL at +01:00
Sorted by distance to the line at the gun. Most boats 20-30 meters behind

1st Upwind

After the start, the left wind came in for a while. Then it looks like wind drop and after this big right shift. The right shift was lifting the leeward boats more, helping them to reduce a bit of their loss.

  1. Pin end boats going pretty well after the start
  2. Left wind kicks shortly, the best for middle boats.
  3. Right wind comes and lifts leeward boats more, reducing their loss a bit
First left, then big right long shift

Top Mark

Big Right shift has turned into the left one just before the mark. Pushing left boats over the layline.

1st Downwind

After the initial left shift, the right wind has filled in. The boats in the front that went on straight set had good time to get to the mark with high angle. The ones gybesetting early had a lot of struggle. The boats more in the back gybe setting had a good timing to catch the right wind and sail all the way down to the gates.

Magpie and AMac did well with the straight set. On the other side Avalon and Yo did a solid job. African Queen was just about to get the right wind, but they gybed away from it.

Magpie reaching up to 12 kts of speed

Gate Rounding

With such a big right shift, the right turn gate was way below, 40m more downwind than the other one. In case of such a big shift, there is only one gate to go.

Steep DTL drops and way longer sailing for right turn boats (Forte with 434m and Should Go Left with 238m sailed)

Just compare Forte with ChillyB and Lisa.

2nd Upwind

Sometimes you need to be at the right place in the right time. Lisa was sailing high on starboard after the tack and then went into the left wind without any transition period. The key point was to go on starboard soon after gate and to stay till hitting the left wind. The left boats god pretty good shift, but ended up over the layline. The boats in the back got another right shift before the top mark, losing even more meters.

seamless transition for mid boats.

2nd Downwind

The boats in the back got the most of it, some reaching high speeds on the way down. Gybe set try from Forte didn’t really work.

Plum dropping a lot of time mid way down
African Queen and Pie going fast, more than 10kts of speed for a short period
