2023 Melges 20 Pre Worlds Race 1

Race Area

With the current wind direction, the race area was not in the downtown wind shadow. Still, a good look in upwind direction can always show some hints on where the wind will have an easier time to pass through.

Start

8 degrees of bias, which creates an already significant 27m of upwind distance difference between the boats on the ends of the line.

008 used 7m more bias than 303, so was ahead even though was further away from the line. Boomer started 9 seconds after the gun, ending up locked out over the RC boat. Pos at start is 0% for RC start, 50% for midline, and 100% for pin end start. Other values should be pretty clear.

1st Upwind

A bit skewed course, but not as bad as it sometimes gets. 1:35 to 1 sailing on port vs starboard tack

Already with the first tack, Boomer went sailing into the header and always had much lower angle than other two. 48.5 compared to 39.3 of 008 is a huge difference and has forced Boomer to sail 350 meters longer in this leg.

The first gain of 008 came by sailing higher angle on port and gaining on 303. The 2nd nice gain came with the left approach to the top mark while 303 struggled a bit more being early on the right layline.

DTL graph -> Distance to leader in upwind meters.

Time – time sailed, Dist – distance sailed UPDST – upwind distance sailed, Mans – maneuver count and cumulative loss in them. ATW – angle to set wind (344 in this case) Heel TR – travel of heel in degrees per minute (the higher the number, the more unstable the boat is). The numbers on the GPS track are losses in maneuvers in upwind meters.

Suggested wind direction based on all the boat’s tracks. Looks like a left and then right shift, so Boomer was pretty much against it all the time.
Performance colored tracks (VMG) Bright green for 008 being lifted on the way to the right and then some red for 303 on top mark approach. The brightest green is the best 10% of sailing, The brightest red the worst 10%.
Port vs Starboard. 303 and Boomer need to zero out their heel on the devices. Too much difference between port and starboard tack.
Polar graph shows how much wider Boomer’s dots are, not getting any shifts. The higher up the screen the dots are, the better the performance is.

Top Mark

303 still not making the mark with many tacks before it. Boomer probably quite over the layline.

1st Downwind

Some compression of the fleet through the downwind. Both boats gaining from the back. Quite an initial loss by Boomer, sailing too high after the hoist.

TTL – time to leader graph in seconds.

Gate Rounding

Already a significant gate marks bias. 008 rounding the higher mark and gaining well to 303. For some reason, Boomer went way more further down.

008 (blue) starting the 2nd upwind 8m higher than green and 17m higher than red. All these meters create a loss which is more than double this difference (boats sailing longer need to go down and back up to come to the same spot)
dashed lines mark the rounding. Note the loss of some 15 seconds by green and more than 20 of the red boat. Count to 20 and you will see how much sailing a boat can do at that time. Is pretty big loss.

2nd Upwind

The wind was on average more right and there was a small right trend during the leg. 303 has gained a bit at the 1st part of the upwind. Losing at the end. Looks like sailing straight behind and in possible wind shadow of 008. Boomer has again so much wider sailing to the wind that it can be it is not just the shifts, but also the overall boat performance. Some of the red dots on the polar show the VMG of almost zero. (VMG is shown by horizontal lines and speed by distance to the center). Also went far over the layline.

Boomer sailing at 2 knots of speed away from the mark as it goes over the layline. VMC – speed to the next mark.

2nd Downwind

Quite a loss by 008 while gybe setting. Probably due to the wind shadow from the boats behind.
Boomer with the fastest downwind. Some because of less expensive straight set and some due to going faster and gaining.
Succesful fast mode by Boomer. Red dots lower down the screen, better VMG
Some layline miss by Boomer. Red colored gybe sets for 303 and 008
