Upwind Distance (UpDist) represents the meters sailed in the upwind direction within the selected time frame.
• When the same time frame is selected for multiple boats without filters, UpDist should match the boat’s VMG.
• For a single leg, UpDist will be longer for a boat that started at the unfavored gate or the unfavored end of the start line. A boat that rounds the mark more tightly will have a slightly shorter UpDist.
• When analyzing roundings only, UpDist is a useful measure of gate bias. It indicates how many extra meters a boat had to sail to return to the same point. Dividing this difference by two gives the gate bias.
