App calculated values explained

Time

Sailed time in the selection.

Dist

Sailed distance in selection

UpDist

Upwind meters sailed in the selection

SOG – speed over ground

SOG is the speed of the boat, in knots. 1 knot=0.514m/s or 1.852km/h

ATW – angle to the wind

ATW shows the moving angle to the wind set by the app. It shows the difference between the COG(course over ground) and wind set by the app slider.

VMG – velocity made good

VMG is the most important value of sailing boats. It shows the speed moving in the wind direction. Whichever boat at a certain time interval has a higher VMG, that boat is performing better. VMG is calculated as SOG(speed over ground) multiplied by the cosine of ATW(angle to the wind). In the app, it is calculated by using the wind set by the app.

Mans – maneuvers and loss

Number of maneuvers at the selected period and overall loss in meters in those maneuvers.

Course

The course between the first and the last selected point. Useful when trying to define the shift that the boat has sailed in a straight line. Is better than using the average COG.

DTL – distance to the leader

DTL shows the distance between the boat and the current leader of the log. Distance is in meters straight upwind. Logs should be cut so that the legs of the boats are properly set.

DTS – distance to self

DTS is the distance between the boat and another “imagined boat” that sails the same leg. The imagined boat starts together with the boat and finishes the leg at the same time, therefore moving at a constant VMG equal to the real boat’s average VMG. Whenever DTS rises, the boat is sailing better than its average VMG of that leg and when falling it is losing to the average VMG. It is a useful value to see where meters were gained or lost, especially if there is no other boat logged to compare to.

Travels (TR)

The app calculates the travels of the heel and pitch by default. Travels can be calculated for any value using the …/Edit Value option. Travels calculate the change of the value per minute. The higher the heel travel is, the boat changes heel more, so it rolls more than the one with the lower number. Travels of the value have the suffix “TR” in the app.

Change Rate (RT)

The change rate calculates the change of the value per second for any given point. The change rate of DTL, for example, gives the value of how many meters per second are lost to the leader. The change rate of the value has the suffix “RATE” in the app.

Changes (CH)

Changes show how many times per minute the value has changed the direction of change, so has reached the peak or the bottom. For changes the minimum size of the peak needs to be set and also the minimum time, so that the fast accidental peaks are not counted in.
