Cutting Races

Cutting Races

The app can segment windward-leeward races using two boundaries. One boundary is the starting time, which remains consistent for all the logs. The other boundary is the location of the finish line, which is marked for each log when a boat crosses the selected finish line. Segmented races can then be analyzed, making selecting each leg and viewing the race statistics easy.

To cut the race:

Ensure you have set the wind direction close to the actual value.

Move the start slider to before the start time of the race.

Move the end slider somewhere after the race finish.

Sliders are a bit wider than the race
Zoom+ to stretch the sliders for fine-tuning.

Use the Zoom+ button to stretch the sliders for fine-tuning.

Start Time

You can select the start time by adjusting the time selection slider to the exact start time. If you’ve already added the start time as an event, the start slider just needs to be positioned near it.

Finish Line

Setting the Finish Line in Your Windward-Leeward Race:

Option 1: Choose a Boat’s Last Position To set the finish line at the last selected position of any boat, follow these steps:

  1. Select the boat you want to use as the reference for the finish line.
  2. Move this boat to the location where it crosses the finish line.

Option 2: Use a Boat’s Starting Position To place the finish line at the starting position of any boat, do the following:

  1. Ensure the chosen boat completes the final leg.
  2. The finish line will automatically align with the starting point of this boat.

Option 3: Utilize the Starting Line as the Finish Line. For a unique approach, you can use the starting line as the finish line. You need to have the start line set with RC and pin events in use. Here’s how:

  1. Position the end slider anywhere on the last leg of the race
  2. The exact location doesn’t matter in this case.

Go to Menu/Log/Cut Race

Select Menu/Log/Cut Race

From this point, you can choose the start time and where the finish line would be:

Cut Race Dialog
Start Time

a) at the start time slider exact value

b) at the nearest “Start Time” event if it has been set. Click here for the setting the start events guide.

Finish Line

a) at any of the boats start position

b) at any of the boats last position (recommended)

All the other boats will use the same finish line so saved races will be of different durations

Pre Start Time

A race can include a designated amount of pre-start sailing time, which is added before the actual start. Timestamps can be displayed to show boat positions at different times during that period.

Start Line

If there is a start line set in use before cutting the races, it will be saved in the cut file. So next time the race is open, it will have all the start events already included.

Saving the races

If a start line is set and in use before cutting the races, it will be saved in the cut file. Therefore, the next time the race is opened, all the start events will already be included.
