Frequently Asked Questions
Q: How does the Free Trial work?
A: The free trial provides unrestricted access to all Pro features for a period of two months, giving you a hands-on experience of SailViewer’s full functionality. To get started right away, click here.
At the end of the 60-day trial, to continue using all features, you must subscribe to the Pro Plan. If you choose not to subscribe, you can still use the Basic Plan for free, which has limited functionality and only allows you to view Speed and VMG on the screen.
Q: What does the pricing model mean by “Device”?
A: The device refers to the tablet or laptop on which SailViewer is installed. The logging app (SailLogger) for Android phones is free, meaning you can log as many boats as you want, with a single SailViewer membership able to be shared between coaches/sailors.
Q: What devices can the SailViewer app run on?
A: The SailViewer app has been designed to run on Android tablets. We recommend the Samsung Galaxy Tab A8 as a cost-effective and reliable option, which goes for about €200. While SailViewer is usable on Android phones, larger screen sizes are recommended for optimal use.
SailViewer can also be installed on Windows machines via Android Emulator software (in the future, it will be possible to run it directly on Windows 11 without the need for an emulator). On Apple Silicon, it can be run through the development tool. The app runs smoothly on all these platforms.
For the time being, SailViewer is not available for iOS devices. Up until now the focus has been on Android devices due to their affordability and ease of development. A common Android tablet (like the Galaxy Tab A8) that can be shared among teams and coaches costs around €200, meaning it’s not expensive to get up and running with SailViewer.
Q: What is the set-up process like?
A: Everything in the app has been designed to be as simple and fast as possible, with no extra steps when they can be avoided.
The upload process is quick and easy. If you have the files on your tablet, you can import them to SailViewer using the app you used to receive the files via the share button of that app. Otherwise, it is just a quick click on Import and selecting the files you want. Once imported, the logs are stored in the app.
For further instructions, see our Get Started page.
Q: How do I gather data from the boat(s)?
A: You can gather boat data using the free SailLogger app, which works in conjunction with SailViewer. SailLogger tracks GPS tracks, heel/pitch, and the heading of the boat, turning any Android phone into a data tracker. And because the app is free to download, multiple teammates can easily log their own data and send it to you to analyse.
Besides using the SailLogger app, data from boats can be obtained through all major tracking devices such as SailMon, Trusail, Deckman, Vakaros, Velocitek, Cyclops Marine, or any smartwatch or phone. SailViewer reads all the values that are exported from other devices, including load cell numbers, heart rate, and any other information that is logged. You can even use your Strava logs or download any app that logs GPX files on both iOS and Android.
All the various log files can be mixed and viewed together, allowing you to compare data even when using different devices.
Q: How accurate is the tracking on SailLogger?
A: SailLogger GPS tracks at a rate of 1 per second, which is sufficient for tactical or technical analysis. Other hardware devices may offer 10Hz tracking, but this level of accuracy is not necessary unless you are focusing on a very short time period of a few seconds and are willing to pay a premium. The logged positions are highly accurate, as modern phone GPS systems use multiple satellite providers and strive to use as many as possible. The heel and pitch are logged at a rate of 5 per second, capturing even the smallest movements of the boat.
Q: What are the limitations of the Basic Plan?
A: The free version of the app has the following limitations:
- Access to all screens, but with limited functionality
- Only 2 user logs can be opened at a time
- Only some basic values are displayed: SOG, VMG, metres sailed, manoeuvres performed, and upwind metres – heel/pitch and all advanced calculated values cannot be viewed
- The graph displays just two metrics: speed over ground (SOG) and velocity made good (VMG)
- No filters
- All Pro features are unlocked for the included Sample Logs, in order to demonstrate the full functionality of SailViewer – opening personal logs will revert to basic features
In summary, a large part of the tactical functionality is not available in the free version of SailViewer, but the app provides the ability to quickly replay and relive your races.
