Maneuvers Screen

The maneuvers screen displays maneuver data for all the maneuvers within the selected time frame. You can switch between tacks and gybes using the Tack/Gybe button. Please note that the screen is still in the experimental version

Smoother entry of the blue boat results in a higher VMG spike at the beginning and more downwind meters covered during the gybe…

GPS tracks

GPS tracks align all the maneuvers in such a way that the head-to-wind crossing point is consistent. By examining multiple maneuvers, you can compare the differences in the sailing paths between the boats. The solid line represents the most typical path for each boat.

Values Table

The values table shows either the median or average values of the selected maneuvers. You can change between the median and average in options

Count: number of tacks/gybes

Loss: Loss in upwind meters to the reference VMG from pre and post-sailing time.

preVMG: reference VMG before the maneuver used to calculate the loss

inVMG: VMG inside the maneuver

postVMG: VMG after the maneuver used to calculate the loss

UpDist: The upwind distance sailed during a maneuver. It is a valuable metric, especially when pre/post-sailing data is unreliable. A higher value indicates better performance.

Value Graph

The value graph displays the selected value for all the maneuvers and illustrates the typical way that the value changes. By clicking on VAL button, you can choose any of the values. It shows the value for the entire period, including the pre-sailing and post-sailing time as configured in the settings. The vertical line marks head-to-wind crossing, the red background is in maneuver time and the green background is sailing time around it.

Settings

Long-click on the GPS path part of the maneuver screen and choose Options. The same menu can be reached through Menu/Settings/Maneuver Timings

Calculate Gybes – if a boat doesn’t have a significant gybe angle, as ILCAs for example, the gybe calculating can be switched off.

Median Values in Table – Switch between median and average values in the table. The median represents the middle point where half of the maneuvers have higher values and half have lower values. It helps filter out unusual maneuvers that might otherwise greatly affect the average.

Maneuver Timings – This setting determines the timings used for maneuver calculations and may need adjustment based on your boat type. Below is a guide on determining optimal values for your specific boat.

Min VMG to consider maneuver – used to prevent slow drifting from being registered as a maneuver.

Setting the maneuver timings

Different sailboats may require different timing settings. To ensure the timings are suitable for your boat type:

On the main graph screen of the app, perform a long press, select ‘Options,’ and enable the ‘Color Maneuver Background‘ option. The graph screen will now display colored areas indicating what is considered to be a maneuver. Choose ‘VMG’ as the value to be shown. The colored area should cover the entire VMG dip during the maneuver, including the initial rapid VMG jump. If it does not cover these areas, it indicates that the timing for considering a maneuver timing needs to be adjusted.

Maneuver timings cover the VMG dip
Maneuver timings not covering the VMG dip. The end of maneuver timing needs to be extended. Slow big keelboat.
