2023 Foiling Week, Moth Race 4

Logs created by Vakaros Devices

Race Area

More left wind direction has changed the race area and longer distances were sailed on port tack.

Start

The start line was biased by 6 degrees, making it 54m better at the pin end. However, starting at the pin forced the boats to tack soon and don’t use any of the benefits of the left side.

Start Data. The start time is not set accurately, so some boats ended up over the line. Many were also pretty far behind.
1st minute of sailing

1st upwind

ITA 3 again showed superior speed and height and popped into the lead. Wind moving left has created quite a difference in behavior. Leaving the boats on the left without pressure at some points. The key point is that the course became skewed a lot to the right. GBR 4944 tacked early and has gained by going to the top mark under the group of boats. ITA 3 probably overstood the mark and didn’t have the best wind on the way to it.

1st downwind

ITA 3 and GRR 4968 have rounded the right-side

gate and have used the exact same lane that was bringing GBR 4944 first to the top mark. Boats on the left mark had less pressure.

2nd upwind

Still there were wind bends on the course, so left was the way to go. The best upwind was done by AUS 4900 who was tacking only once and using the high mode to round the right-hand gate. Saving another tack and not sailing on starboard tack away from shore was the key point.

2nd downwind

This leg became pretty skewed, especially for the boat that have rounded the right-hand top mark and gybed. Most boats did this, learning the lesson from the previous legs. So not much could happen during this leg. It is easy to see how sucked to the upwind NED4747 was.
