Moth 2023 Foiling Week, Race 6

Tracked by Vakaros Atlas 2

Start

The start line was biased on the pin side since the wind went left during the day. Again, with such a long line, bias gets a significant upwind meters value of 78m between the RC and Pin end. The leader after the start was AUS 4900, even though it was 18m behind the line. AUS had an advantage of 11m over the second-placed ITA 3 which was 20m behind the line and a bit closer to the RC. GER 53 was over the line 6m at the RC, but still 14m behind the leading boat.

bias used should have positive values, so AUS was 47m of upwind distance ahead of the boat that would cross the line at the same time at RC.

1st upwind

As the day before, it looks like that once wind goes too much left, there is no sign of wind bending anymore. So the path to the shore was pretty much straight, even with a slight header. ITA 3 was again showing superior speed, but then what counted a lot in such a tight race is the first tack. ITA has lost 88m in a tack, compared to only 18m lost by GER 53 and 23m and 25m of AUS 00 and NOR.

Even though rolled and covered by NOR, ITA 3 has managed to lift above and make the right-hand gate mark with a single tack only. On the way to the mark, there was also no left bend anymore. AUS 00 was leading the rest of the pack at the other mark

1st downwind

As in the late racing on a day before, there was no longer benefit in going straight set all the way. ITA 3 rounded the right-hand mark, gybed soon, and had the fastest downwind of all boats. USA 87 had one of the best runs by early gybing. In the main pack, NZL 45 has passed the group of boats.

Gaining place of USA 87, NZL and GER. Two of them capsized after the gybe.

2nd Upwind

Wind direction went even more left to 200 and boats were mostly tacking early. USA 87 and GBR 44 have continued and got some big left puffs, making them the fastest boats on this upwind. Note in the polar graph how much faster and higher their dots are on port tack (purple and pink).

USA 87 and GBR 44 highest and fastest on port tack

The interesting thing was that there was now an opposite wind bend than usual on the port tack, with boats getting headed.

USA 87 and GBR 44 gaining

2nd downwind

Rounding the right-hand mark was again gaining, with NOR having the fastest last downwind. AUS00 went a bit too far and even though it had the highest speeds, was sailing at bad angles, but still had one of the best downwinds in the fleet.
