Start
The start line was slightly biased to Starboard and most of the sailors were choosing that side of the line. Closest and leading after the gun were NOR and GBR 44. Of other boats, ITA 3 was 35m and NED 47 62m behind the leaders. However, on the way to the shore, they have popped up to the leading two places, with NED 47 even gaining a few meters on ITA 3
1st upwind
Once again the wind was not right enough that pin end start could result in sailing enough to gain on the windward boats. Also, that meant that hitting the shore early took you to the middle of the lake too soon. And another bad point is that you need to shoot for the top mark layline from far away, usually overstanding it to make sure not to do another tack. ITA 3 had a great lane to the shore, giving the boats behind almost 100m of distance, but had some big issues at the tack losing miles to the others. NED 47 had to tack soon, got the lift to the middle of the lake and was in the lead. That lead was lost once sailing on starboard in a big left shift at the mark. NED has even nailed the layline great from pretty far but was not enough to take the lead. ITA 3 recovered and had the best lane to the top mark, getting lifted more than the boats at the left. Only the GER01 got an extremely left shift on approach to the mark.
1st downwind
All the boats sailed a similar path, with NZL 42, NOR, and AUS 00 trying to add another gybe and losing more because of that.
2nd Upwind
2nd upwind was different in a way that the higher lane to the left was gaining. GBR 44 and NOR have gained on the left pack. However, they did not gain on ITA 3, so it might just be because of the clear lanes. This is why is always better if logs are looked at by someone that has been on the water. Something that becomes easy for everyone if using the SailViewer app. If wind shadow is that significant, quite often, when there is traffic in front, it pays to take other gate mark and pick a clear lane. Also, the wind has gone to the left and boats didn’t come to the shore as high as from the Race committee start.
2nd Downwind
Boats followed similar paths. With the only good boat taking the other mark capsizing, it is not possible to say if that would work. The fastest on this downwind was USA 87, 1 second faster than leader ITA 3. The wind was again always clocking to the left during the race.
