2023 Foiling Week Moth Race 1

Start Line

There was a slight bias of 3 degrees at the start, favoring Race Committee. Even though the bias is almost unnoticeable, it creates 32m of upwind difference between RC and Pin end. Just a good reminder that with the line this long (650m), if you can see significant bias, the advantage in meters will be huge and you need a very strong reason not to start at the favored end. (10 degrees bias would mean 112m of upwind distance).
There were a few boats pretty close to the line. GBR4968 was a bit behind but soon arrived in the leading position. Impressive are the numbers of ITA3 which was trailing the leader by 49m and has reduced that to 27m after a minute.
Some of the boats were still reaching for a while after the gun, effectively having almost 0 vmg.

1st Upwind

There was typical Garda wind bend where the shores are sucking in the wind, creating lift when you head towards shore, and then after tack you quickly get out that lift and get more left wind on the outside. So the usual goal is to stay as much as possible in that bend of right wind inshore (brightest green colored on gps tracks) and find a good time to go for the mark.
The App suggests a wind of 227 for the 1st part of the upwind and 212 at the approach to the top mark, clearly showing the bend in the wind.

GBR 4968 kept the lead, tacking just a bit under the layline. WITH AUS 4900 and GBR 4944 behind. Ita 3 went to the other mark and rounded a few seconds before AUS4900, but lost a bit due to extra gybe needed. Gbr 4944 had some issues at the mark.

Bright green showing high VMGs. The key point is staying in that area towards the land.
1st upwind stats

1st downwind

Leaders were extending, with ITA3 gaining after the initial loss to the AUS4900. USA 4847 had the best speed and angle for quite a while, as can be seen in the polar dots graph (dark yellow) with 27.7kts of max speed and almost going straight to the marks. The course was also a bit skewed so the first starboard gybe was shorter than the long port tack one.

2nd upwind

Ita 3 has gained some seconds on GBR by going a bit further to the left corner. AUS4900 had some issues and lost a few boats. Once again, the same wind bending is shown on the tracks of the boats. Clearly is visible how the outside boats are falling down toward the inshore ones.

2nd downwind

GBR 4968 and AUS 4900 had the fastest 2nd downwind with GBR 4968 doing two extra gybes. ITA 3 was just a bit slower. There was a nice battle between NED and GBR 4944 with both sailing downwind at exactly the same time.
