2023 J70 Worlds Race 4

Race Area

Start

This time there was 10 degree of bias. It made the line 130m better at the pin. Also, the mid-RC was below the line creating a disadvantage for other boats that were there. Swish was 30m below the big line at the start. Only Rowdy, Jelvis, and Stampede were near the line.

1st Upwind

After the start, Elvis, Cool Story and Swish reduced the gap, but still the initial distance was too big. Rowdy and Jelvis sailed pretty low, while Stampede had the best lane out of the start. Vamos was crossing 80m ahead of Elvis, this time start bias pretty much defined the race.

The wind Shifting at first left and then right at the end

The wind was having the left and then the right shift. The left shift especially benefiting the boats on the right side (Vamos and Swish) that got big lift. The course was also skewed by 10 degrees to the right, so much more sailing on port tack. Stampede has lost some meters at the left side.

Jelvis and Leonteq got nice right shifts to gain a lot and get back in. However, Leonteq went too far left and there was no more space to play the shifts and they faced the header on the way to the mark. Swish had big gains from below on the right side.

10 degrees off and you already have to know that you will run out of the left side soon. 1:1.6 sailing ratio. Rowdy has sailed to the top mark which was at 58 degrees and wind was at 43. On the other side, Elvis had tom mark at 46 degrees. Showing the difference between start line ends.
big lifts for Swish and Vamos on the right

Top Mark

Jelvis losing some places by ducking hard. Cool Story also ended up tacking 2 more times.

1st Downwind

After the initial gybe-set loss, Elvis and Stampede were gaining the most and had the fastest downwind. Leonteq was gaining, too but the initial loss was too big. ROwdy gained a bit on Vamos by going full left with faster mode, sailing 400m longer.

Gate Rounding

Big bias, resulting in a lot of distance given away by the boats that took the right hand mark.

Watch Jelvis and Elvis rounding. More than 20 seconds gained.
100m to and from mark numbers

2nd Upwind

Shifty upwind with wind going a bit right on average. Still big left kick 3/4 up the beat.

Cool Story has the fastest upwind, sailing 5 degrees better shifts than the slowest Swish. Elvis was the only boat in the middle going down, not using the wind and shifts well, possibly also quite in a bad air.

2nd Downwind

The boats behind jumped into the fast mode earlier than the leader and were gaining well. Leonteq continued to go slower and was losing. Stampede gained well with Rowdy, but has lost quite some meters close to the finish.

Modes. Horizontal lines are the VMG, could go over 10 if good fast mode sailed.
